About This Website
USAFSS Misawa Family is a public website created and maintained by Dutch Wiest and is intended as a companion to and an extension of the www.USAFSSinMisawa.org members-only website headed by Helen Henderson.

If you served in Misawa on Security Hill (aka 1st Radio, aka The Hill) between 1949 and 1979, and find this site interesting, you'll find much more on www.USAFSSinMisawa.org, and you are urged to contact Helen Henderson. There is no cost to join.

Creating this site was initially suggested by Margaret Daberko (Ganter), a member of the 6921st Security Group 1973-1974. She in turn enlisted Dutch Wiest, a 1959-1962 veteran of the 6989th RSM, to execute the website design and implementation. The team was rounded out by the consulting perspective of Helen Henderson who served in Misawa 1973-1975.

Initially, a primary reason for establishing the site was to provide a mechanism for collecting, posting, and sharing the thoughts, impressions, and photos of all who attended the informal Misawa Reunion and annual meeting of the Freedom Through Vigilance Association (FTVA) scheduled late September, 2002.

The mission statement of Helen Henderson's USAFSS in Misawa, Japan website is,

"To locate and reconnect the men and women who served in the USAF Security Service in Misawa, Japan, the years from 1949 to 1979."

In support of that mission, the scope and purpose of this site was since broadened to include locating USAFSS veterans who served in Misawa, and encourage them to contact us in an effort to reunite this family.

A separate area of this site has been devoted to photographs of Heritage Hall located on Security Hill in Misawa. The Hall is an ongoing project of both military and civilian personnel currently on Security Hill to preserve and promote the history and culture of Misawa's intelligence mission established there in the early 1950's.

Heritage Hall opened June 19, 2002 and B.J. Cook, who served two tours in Misawa (1959-1963 and 1972-1975), made the journey to attend opening ceremonies. His many photographs can be found posted on this site along with those taken by TSgt. Tom Peirson and TSgt. Tom Watkins, both of whom were stationed in Misawa at that time. Further, we hope to show Misawa Vets what Misawa looks like now, and have posted current photographs of Security Hill, Misawa AB, Misawa City, and the surrounding area.

Finally, this website serves as a home for remembering and honoring Misawa's Fallen Eagles. This area of the site offers what we collectively know about those Misawa veterans who have gone ahead, as we continue to exhaustively research and gather further detail.
